JOHN D'CRUZ

"One verse that spoke truth to me was in Psalm 139 it says “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely.” I felt that all my misconception I had with God was slowly starting to fade away and that I was not forgotten as a child of God."

John D' Cruz

At the start of the month, I was pretty much a lukewarm catholic when it comes to faith. I would only focus on Jesus on Sundays and community time. I felt quite distant from God as I wasn’t able to see His hands or feel His presence in my life. I would often compare my spiritual journey with the brother and sisters in my community and often felt inadequate. I felt a sense of guilt as to not being able to maintain a relationship with God, especially after going through last year Combine University Retreat, where I did experience His Love. Close to the end of this month, I attended the School of Christian Leadership (SOCL).

During the Session on the Father’s Love, I was reminded of how God was always there for me even if I did not seem to notice it. One verse that spoke truth to me was in Psalm 139 it says “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely.” I felt that all my misconception I had with God was slowly starting to fade away and that I was not forgotten as a child of God. During the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, I was reminded of a past incident when I was in wrongly accused of something I did not do. I remembered feeling so hurt and scared, and was questioning where was Jesus and why did I had to go through all of this as a young kid. However, the Lord spoke to me through an image, where Jesus was standing beside me and simply comforting me in that moment of distress.

The Lord opened my eyes to see how His Hands were truly present during the many times when there seemed to be no one. Now having reflected for the past one month, I realised my relationship with Jesus has for too long been a very ‘Philia’ type of love which was very mutual type of love,I think the Lord is calling me to live an ‘Agape’ type of love, where love is given unconditionally and does not expect anything in return. For me, one thing that I need graces to improve on is to be more proactive in my community, as for far too long I was always a bit shy as I was the did not want to stand out. During one of the sessions in SOCL, the session giver mentioned how our faith is a personal one but not meant to be kept private. We are each called to share the Lord’s goodness in our lives with our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. One Church!
